i want to learn about the Golden Retriever breed!!!?
I have a dog right now an is 2yrs old. He an is an American Staffordshire Terrier. He loves other animals so he is definately not the main concern as far as accepting another dog into our family! My question is… What kind of dogs are Golden Retrievers? I want to know everything from there temperment, maintenance, shedding, all the way to the training! I want to know if it would be a good dog to bring into my home with other pets! Please let me know anything and everything that you think could help me make a good choice!
Find a Golden breeder in your area and ask her some questions about their dogs. Go visit them. The best information, good AND bad, about any breed is from a reputable breeder.

They have wonderful temperments, although they are STUBBORN. They love kids, and are great with them, especially since they are bred to withstand pain. They shed a lot and do need grooming, but love to be brushed so that helps. They want so very hard to please you, so training is fun, but like I said before, they are bullheaded! They love other animals, too. Due to their popularity, they are being overbred and health issues are popping up, especially hip problems, so please make sure to find a good breeder (akc.org) or rescue one.

IMO they are wonderful dogs with a well rounded temperament and you can almost always find a good one in the shelters or rescues. Try looking at more on dogbreedinfo.com for some additional research. BOL!

Golden retrievers are amazing dogs! They are extremely friendly and loving, and usually are very good with children and other animals. I was young when I had a golden, and she let us do anything to her and just laid there and gave kisses. She was very laid back and unlike some other goldens i know, she didn't require a ton of exercise. They do shed a lot, so be prepared to vacuum, and they also need to be brushed so that they don't get mats. For more information on them, you can go to http://www.breederretriever.com. They have lots of great information about every aspect of living with and caring for dogs of all breeds.

golden retrievers are amazing dogs. they do shed, but if you brush them daily-it isn't that bad. i'm a neat freak but i've been able to convince myself that it's just dog hair and not a big deal! LOL. anyway—they are very mild tempered and a GREAT family dog. they are very protective of their family and very easy to train. they are just an active but laid back animal. they get along well with other animal-mine sleeps with my cats! one of my best friends has one also and when her kids are out in the yard playing, you should see how the retriever keeps herself between the kids and the road-no way is one of those children going into the road-they really are amazing dogs and i thik you'll be very pleased if you get one. i think mine always looks like he's smiling-i LOVE a smiling dog! they do have issues with hip dysplasia, but i got mine at a shelter and i'm not even sure if she's a pure breed (she doesn look pure breed, but that doens't mean she is) but she hasn't had any physical issues and the vet thinks she's 7-8 yrs old. they can be a little stubborn, but they will give-they love to please their families.

I´ve had a golden retriever for 15 years now.. more than one.
Golden retrievers are great companions, they are very very loyal, they love to be around with little kids, they are very very easy to train, but you have to have a good disciplinary hand on then too. Most of all, they will thank you for having them
´´ in the right spot´´.
Golden retrievers need lots of exercise, so they can be strong and in shape. They make excellent excercise buddies.
also, they are very social animals, they are kind of non violent.
The main problem ive had with my golden retriever has been his shedding problems.. you probably have to groom it almost everyday if you are a very dedicated owner. his coat has to be pretty clean and also golden retrievers suffer from the outdoor heat so if this helps, its good to cut their hair once in a while.
the fact of not grooming your golden will result in A LOT of hair loss but hairs around the house usually stay in the main corners.
Golden retrievers love being accompanied and they will do anything to please the owners, they enjoy playing outdoors and they thank dearly long walks.
Shower golden retrievers once a week and try to keep their fur dry, because they sometimes suffer from hot spots(if you dont know what that is reaserch it) resulting from sensitive skin.
They do grow kind of big so it is pretty good if they have enough space to excercise
Goldens are sweet animals but they do need to be taken care of
when goldens are little, like any other pets they do need company and lots of attention and as mentioned before discipline.
Let me know if you ever get it for more advice
Good Luck and enjoy it!

Owned golden retrievers ever since i was little
I have two golden retrievers and they are completely different from one another. One sheds a lot while the other hardly sheds. One has the energy of a border collie and the other is pretty lazy (they are both about three). One is super stubborn, gets in the trash, very protective, and will steal your food if your not looking. The other is very obedient, never makes mess, and wouldn't dare eat off your plate. Every dog has a different personality.
You can read everything you want on the Internet about goldens but there is no guarantee that your dog will be exactly like that. The best thing to do is talk to the breeder and get to know the parents well. Or if you are rescuing, make sure to spend plenty of time w/ the dog by yourself and with your terrier.

Golden Retriever's are a sporting dog. They were first bred tro be a hunters companion in the 1800. They have been one of the the best companion dogs ever since.
Golden's come in colors froma draker golden to a very light pale golden. Males will usualy weight between 75 and 85 pounds, Fremales 65 to 75 pounds! Tey usually live to be 12 to 14 years old some longer. I had a male live to be 15 1/2 years old!
Golden should be loyal, intelligent, sure footed, willing to please their owners, they will bark at strangers. They need obedience training from their puppy stage to adulthood! Golden's are still used as a hunting compainion but they also make wonderful family dogs because of their easy going temperment and willingness to please their owners.
Golden go through 2 major sheds a year. Speing and fall. A good plan of brushing ewith the proper tools and their coats will remain easy to maintain. I have a good schedule of brushing each of my Golden's to keep the amount of hair to a minimum. Usually Goldens have no problems with other dogs the only problem may be birds. They are bird dogs by their nature!
Golden make wonderful therapy dogs aand they also love to swim, hike and once they are finished growing at 2 years old they can even accompany you on a jog! Golden are a large breed dog! They growth pattern is one of slow and steady growth until 2 years old. Then they will fill out from that point on. AA dog food of 24% protein or lass is recomended for proper and slow growth.
If you see a Golden in your future please research each breeder you look at. They should have all their heath screening done on both parents. OFA hips of good to excellent, eye's cleared, heart cleared, elbows, and thyroid. All cleared. It may cost you a bit more to find a breeder who does all these health clearences but it will be well worth your effort to have a pup that will hopefully be healthy and happy to be with you for many, many years.
AKC registtration I feel is too important! Just remember that AKC Golden's do not guarntee quality, only the health clearences along with the registration does that!
Best of luck looking for your Golden pup!
If I've missed something your wanting to know please feel free to e-mail me!
add: Thanks Loki for starting the question for me to see!

Former Golden breeder and owner for over 20 years
Honestly Goldens are easy peasy if you've dealt with a Staffie, if your dog is well trained and socialized as you say, then do the same with the GR and you won't have any problems. I think goldens are the perfect starter dogs. I recommend them most for someone who has never owned a medium/large breed before, just because they're so easy. The only issue is hair. They shed a lot, all year long. Daily brushing is pretty much the only way to keep it under control as is having a tape clothes roller and a good vacuum, I would get a shopvac at Lowes, they aren't as easily damaged by hair. I also ended up having my goldens bathed at a groomer because it was too hard to do it myself, it's hard to get them wet and the hair is hard to get off of yourself afterwards and it's pretty icky.
But, their personality definitely makes up for the hair!
ADD: I disagree with suki.lin about grooming. I would not bathe them unless they actually stink. Even mud is easier to BRUSH out than wash out. When bathed they do need to be blow dried or they will have a wet dog smell for a few days bathing too often will result in dry skin. I do agree they need to be kept dry as they do get hot spots when left moist. Also, with ANY breed, hair=insulation. That means insulation from cold as well as HEAT, it works the same way as insulation in a house, it's not only for cold. I do not agree that you should shave a golden for convenience. Shaving them reduces their ability to stay cool and makes them succeptable to burns and scratches. Their skin is different than a short coarse haired dog like a AmStaff, it just isn't that tough, which is one of the reasons they have a dense, medium length coat ("firm and resillient" as per the standard) in the first place.

Had them for the first 18years of my life! Only switched 2 years ago because I was traumatized and wanted something different. Too bad the personalities aren't THAT different in a dobe (at home anyway).
