GOLDEN RETRIEVER!!!!!!?

We just got a 4 year old golden retriever and we are trying to find a good way to control his slobber issues and the way he drinks so we don’t have to clean the floors every time he eats or drinks. We REALLY want to keep him! Any ideas?
Thanks guys! Theesee reallllyyy helped. We aren’t getting rid of him THANK THEE LORD! But any ideas on how I could teach him to stay at his water bowl after drinking? What if we’re not home though?!

Wipe his mouth with a rag. The dog cannot really control this. It’s because he has slightly loose jowls. My Golden Retriever is also quite sloppy when eating and drinking.
Be glad you don’t have a REALLY slobbery breed.

You would really consider getting rid of a dog because it slobbers when it drinks?!

He’s just a puppy right now, so you just have to deal with it right now.
He will get better as he matures.

There are many containers out there that can keep your dog from making a mess around its dinner and water dish.

He may have overactive salvia glands that cause his slobbering. If that’s the case there is nothing you can do. To keep him from splashing everywhere, put his water bowl ontop on an old rug, or stand by him while he drinks. If he drinks to fast, quickly pick up the bowl, hold it for a moment, then return it. Keep doing this until he learns that drinking fast makes the water get taken away.

Keep the water outside (as long as he always has access) and feed him outside would be the only thing you can do

Well, my advice would be to really think about whether or not you really do want the dog. If you are willing to give the dog up over a slobber problem.

    My advice would be to:
    1. Hand feed the dog so the amount is more controlled and he isn’t making a mess. This is also a good way to establish to him that you are the provider.
    2. A towel would be a great place mat for under his water dish. Also giving him small amounts at a time would remedy a large amount of spilled water, BUT remember that you have to continually monitor the water intake and output. If you forget to give your dog water, you could very easily dehydrate him and not only is that neglect it would cause serious health problems.

    Good luck

We put carpet in the laundry room that soaks up most of the water. That was the best we could do.

It can be a sloppy mess, but here is a couple of things you can do:

    1. Get an elevated water bowl. You want one made of plastic with stainless steel
bowls. Make sure it’s heavy enough that he won’t push it over. Put some indoor/outdoor
    mats underneath it.

    2. Train him to wait after he drinks for you to come over and wipe off his mouth area. He’s a golden, this won’t be very difficult, combined with step 3.

    3. Schedule drinking times. It’s most important after feeding and play. Be careful on hot humid days though, they need lots of water. If you find him near his water bowl, you need to fill it for him immediately.

    4. Have a callout system. When someone is nearby and he’s drinking, be prepared to wait until he’s down and then wipe him off.

    5. Accept it. He’s a family member with a little problem. Don’t dispose of him like an old appliance.
