To Golden Retriever Breeders in UK, and Elsewhere if It Applies?

I think a Goldie is a beautiful dog. To see a mature one in beautiful condition on the move with that gorgeous golden coat shining in the sun is a joy.

So why oh why are so many breeders moving away from that beautiful colour that gave the breed its name, to a thing that looks like a poor weedy cousin to a Maremma sheepdog?

I have asked one or two breeders, why there are so many pale cream/ almost white examples, only to be told "Oh we are breeding Champagne Retrievers" ????

Sorry!! just looks like a yuck white to me. Is it just the fancy? If so I think it is a shame.

I could not agree with you more.
Champagne, White, English, Klondike, all of these are absolutely terrible looking and should not be considered Golden Retrievers at ALL!
There is no need nor justification for breeding Goldens specifically to be WHITE! Why do we call them GOLDEN Retrievers?? Because the coat is GOLD in shade!
Sure, in natural results, some Goldies turn out very light Gold or Yellow, but two Goldens bred together do NOT produce White unless you specifically and irresponsibly breed for white.
I think it is a terrible shame and that there is no justifying it.
People should not be able to alter a breed's apperance whenever they want for whatever reason, especially if the reason is, "oh, but it is so popular!"
If they really wanted White Goldens, then they could create a breed as such, maybe the "white retriever".
Which, by the way, I am still against because we have no need for further breeds.

This whole thing just exemplifies the greed of all breeders, especially show breeders, who breed for appearance more often than health and original function.

Those are called light cream colored coats, I used to breed Golden Retreivers, I only had two lights, Spock and Sophie, there are also dark golden in which I had 3 goldens (Fargie Darci Gemneisa) and some regular in the middle goldens I had 4 of those (Tinkerbell Daffeyelle Penguin and Payton) I love the breed, and all colors of them.

While cream is an allowed shade under the standard, I do find that it seems to be overly popular in the UK.

To me, a Golden should be golden, not red or cream.
