Help! I desperatly need to know a good estimate of the Height, Length, Width and Weight of a 5 month male golden retriever puppy! could anyone help me please!! Thanks
I am looking to buy a crate…because in march we will be moving and so I need a good estimate for when he is 5 months.
And also the pet transportation agency needs to know his measurements and I do not know what to tell them…
In addiion, I would like to know an approximation of the cost to transport a puppy overseas.
My male golden is now 20 months. At five months he was 45 pounds, I would think he was 18 inches at the shoulder. I only keep track of weight and shoulder height measurements of my adult dogs. Size also depends on what your golden was bred for, my dogs come from working field stock, translation when they are adults they are right on the nose to the AKC breed specs. But, there are Golden's that hit 100 pounds with ease and when they are puppies they are HUGE.
Are you looking to buy a crate? If so, buy the wire crate with the divider in it for the size recommended for the adult sized Golden. This crate will cost you more, but it is a good investment, it will be the only one you will have to buy.
If I knew a little more about why you are asking this I would be able to help you out a little better.
Ok. If you are transporting your puppy by air you will need an airline aprroved crate, not the metal crate I first suggested. These are called vari-kennels, they are plastic ones. Skip the Pet Store chains, way over priced there. Go to the SuperCenter place, they have airline approved crates for less than half price of the pet stores. At 5 months old all of my Goldens fit into a Medium sized crate. The transportation companies require enough room for the dog to stand up and turn around……but not be spread out like on the bed……safety issues here. I think a medium crate would be just fine. Buy a water bottle from the hamster department, don't use the water dish that comes with the crate.
I would check with the transportaton company, when I have shipped dogs the airline was more interested in the size of the crate not the size of the dog. The measurements you are asking about are not the typical way one would measure a dog. You can check measurements for crates at any of the petstore's websites.
How old is this your puppy now? And how much does he weigh, now? All of my Goldens have been from the same bloodlines, (males) they all weighed about the same during the growth stages. You may be able to do a good guess, based on his current age and the weight of his parents. You may want to get touch with your breeder, he or she would be the best resource on their puppies' growth rate and average weights. He or she may even have a 5 month old puppy to measure?
You can also look on the web for companies that handle all the arrangements for shipping dogs, They maybe be helpful enough and tell you what size crate they generally use for a 5 month Golden.

There is no 'estimate'. It all depends on the lines the dog comes from, and the individual dog. Dogs don't come in premade molds.
Suffice it to say, most Goldens will be on the medium-large side of the scale.
